Rancho Peñasquitos
Rancho Peñasquitos is a neighborhood in the northeastern part of San Diego. Peñasquitos translates “little cliffs” in Spanish. It is right next to a canyon which is an open space preserve that you can bike ride, hike, and horse trail riding.
There is Native American history in the area that dates back as far as 6,900 years ago. Evidence of the prehistoric culture can still be found. Rancho de los Peñasquitos was San Diego County’s first Mexican land grant. In 1823, 4,243 acres was Gifted to Captain Francisco María Ruiz, a Commandant of the San Diegan Presidio. This one league was at the eastern part of the Los Penasquitos Canyon and went all the way into into Sabre Springs and up through Rancho Bernardo.
